While training to fly B-25 Mitchell bombers, the men of the 477th also fought against the racial segregation of the U.S. Army Air Forces, culminating in the Freeman Field Mutiny of April 1945, when more than 100 Black officers were arrested for protesting the segregated officers' club at Freeman Field, Indiana. Their act of civil disobedience was one of the most significant in American military history and helped pave the way for President Truman's Executive Order 9981, which desegregated the U.S. military in 1948.
