Queen Nzinga Mbandi, also known as Ana de Sousa Nzinga Mbande, was born around 1583 in the Kingdom of Ndongo in present-day Angola. She became queen of Ndongo in 1624 and later conquered the Kingdom of Matamba, ruling both kingdoms until her death in 1663 at approximately 80 years of age. A brilliant military tactician and diplomat, she negotiated with Portuguese colonial authorities, formed alliances with the Dutch, and led her armies in battle personally, refusing to accept Portuguese domination of her people. She is celebrated throughout Angola and across Africa as a symbol of resistance, female leadership, and the fight against slavery and colonialism. Her portrait appears on Angolan currency, and her statue stands in Luanda, Angola's capital.
