Emperor Haile Selassie I, born Tafari Makonnen in 1892, held the titles King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, titles that connected him to the ancient Solomonic dynasty of Ethiopia and to the biblical tradition of the Lion of Judah. In Rastafari theology, Haile Selassie I is revered as the returned messiah, the fulfillment of Marcus Garvey's prophecy, and the living embodiment of African liberation and divine kingship.
