Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross around 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, and escaped slavery in 1849. She was so successful that slaveholders offered rewards of up to $40,000 for her capture, making her one of the most wanted people in the antebellum South. During the Civil War, she served as a spy, scout, and nurse for the Union Army, and in 1863 led the Combahee River Raid, liberating more than 700 enslaved people in a single night. She later became an active participant in the women's suffrage movement. In 2016, the U.S. Treasury announced that Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
