His novel Petals of Blood (1977) led to his detention without trial by the Kenyan government, and he has lived in exile since 1982. His work in Gikuyu, including the novel Wizard of the Crow (2006), has been translated into more than thirty languages and has inspired generations of African writers to embrace their own languages and cultural traditions.
